Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, 2014 is a multi-award winning book. It is probably best for grades 5 and up.
Jacqueline Woodson recounts her childhood in nostalgic verse. It took me several pages to get into the rhythm of the story, but once I did I was hooked. I felt connected to the little girl she was and the era she lived in. She had to deal with discrimination issues and while that is an important part of her journey, there is so much more. There were times of change not only in her personal life, but also in society. Luckily, she always had the love of her family, especially her grandparents to see her through. Her self-discovery and growing understanding of the world are beautifully told.
