Gregor the Overlander

Gregor the Overlander is written by Suzanne Collins, 2003.  She is the same author who wrote The Hunger Games trilogy.Unlike the YA audience for the Hunger Games, this book series is geared for a more juvenile fiction group. Best for about grades 3-7, depending on reading abilities. Although, I thoroughly enjoyed it myself.

The main character is living in poverty conditions after his father's disappearance, when one day he falls through an opening in the laundry room to a whole new world. This is a place where rats, roaches, and bats are large and part of the society. War exists between the different creatures/humans. Gregor plays a pivotal role in resolving the conflict.

I definitely knew I was reading a book for a much younger audience because of the simplified language, but the story was intriguing. The subject matter was on the dark side, including abandonment, trust, poverty, war, and death. Suzanne Collins does not sugar coat the plot or characters for her younger readers. I like that.

This book is a good choice for kids who like fantasy adventure dealing with the less pleasant side on life. And it's a 2015 Bluestem Award nominee. See BLUESTEM for more information.
